I’m not really feeling into talking about terrorism/villains/evil things that happen in the world because it just doesn’t seem appropriate. Also, to be honest, I read books and fiction so I can get away from real life. So I’m going to answer last week’s Booking Through Thursday question (which I wanted to answer but didn’t have time to).
Have you ever felt pressured to read something because ‘everyone else’ was reading it? Have you ever given in and read the book(s) in question or do you resist? If you are a reviewer, etc, do you feel it’s your duty to keep up on current trends? (This question was spurred by the Twilight series trend).
Yes, yes, and more yes. Good reviews make me want to read books. The lastest “hot read” makes me want to find out why it’s a hot read. I did get sucked into Twilight, and Harry Potter, and a number of other series or books that friends recommended.
That being said, it’s more about curiousity than pressure. I want to read the book for myself — to experience the story. That’s how it is with all books, but when a certain book is getting a lot of press (good, bad, passionate, obsessive, etc.) you have to admit, it’s intriguing.

I like to experience the story too

Mostly I find giving in to a reading trend works out well, too (aka, again, Twilight and Harry Potter). However, sometimes it turns out to be bad, especially if I BUY the book instead of checking it out, which I usually do. For me, that scenario was that Oprah Book by Eckhart Tolle (“A New Earth,” or something?). I didn’t get past the introduction.
